A New Course to train Florida licensed Dental Hygienists to safely administer dental anesthesia under the supervision of a Florida Licensed Dentist

This sixty hour course teaches and covers the neurophysiology, armamentarium, techniques of local anesthesia, complications, and legal considerations of administering local anesthetics.  The relevance of psychosomatic pain control and topical and local anesthesia to the Dental Hygiene practice is emphasized.  This course is specifically designed to obtain certification for the administering of local anesthesia in the State of Florida.

This course will be in two parts. The 30-hour online didactic component, covering the theoretical aspects of administration of local anesthetics must first be successfully completed.  The 30-hour clinical component consists of six hours observation and 24 hours clinical experience.  The six hours of local anesthesia observation must be completed, after which the 24 hour clinical component will be started. The 24-hour supervised clinical component includes observation, faculty demonstration of correct techniques, student practice time using mannequins, and student demonstration of skills on patients. Qualified faculty will evaluate the individual performance of each student. The clinical component includes electronic models which are used first, and culminates with students successfully anesthetizing targeted areas of the oral cavity.  Students will be expected to participate as both clinicians and patients.

The required Lab component will be held each month on two days, Thursday 6-9 pm and Friday 8 am to 6 pm, in the Dental Clinic in the Mary L. Fields Health Science Center on the IRSC Main Campus in Fort Pierce, FL.
